Community building

You are here:

The Centre initiates and supports community projects that work towards finding local solutions to local issues, and strengthening the community.

We also support programs that tackle disadvantage, to provide real and practical benefit as people in strong communities are more connected, more supported and feel safer. We support activities that encourage civic participation, and build pride in the local community.

Some of our community building activities include:

  • Conflict Resolution: We have run training workshops for community members in dispute and with Yarra Neighbourhood Houses and tenants associations. These workshops increase community capacity to resolve disputes and manage community disagreements appropriately.
  • Supporting local events and community festivals such as the Harvest festival, Moon Lantern festival and Fitzroy Outdoor Cinema.
  • Provide community work hours -  NJC offenders on community orders carry out unpaid community work that benefits the Yarra community. This is a valuable way for offenders to contribute to the community for the harm caused by their behaviour.

Community Justice Grants

Do you have a project that addresses community safety, disadvantage or social conflict? You may be eligible to apply for a Community Justice Grant!

The Neighbourhood Justice Centre sponsors Community Justice Grants for projects in the City of Yarra. These grants provide support for projects that address the underlying causes of off ending, lower the crime rate, support victims, improve safety and increase confidence in and access to the justice system. These $5,000-10,000 grants are run in partnership with the City of Yarra Community Grants Program.
