Behind the Sentence: Young Voices on Family and Incarceration

Presented by a local partner organisation with NJC support, this event features a panel discussion on Children with a Parent in Prison Say They Need to Be Seen, Recognised, and Responded To—a report by Monash University. Panellists include Ralph Gotlib (Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School), Associate Professor Catherine Flynn (Monash University), Moana Wati (SHINE for Kids), Stevie Wright (SNAICC – National Voice for our Children) and Vincent Shin (Westjustice).
Following the panel, stay for the launch of Behind the Sentence, a projection artwork by Dr. Paula Mahoney. This powerful installation amplifies the voices of young people with incarcerated parents.
Reclaimed Voices: Stories of Justice at NJC

Presented in partnership with the Aspiring Young Africans Foundation (ASPYA), this event features a screening of Reclaimed Voices, a documentary following Sabir Banek’s journey through the youth justice system and beyond. A discussion with ASPYA will follow, focusing on community, resilience, and reimagining justice through lived experience.
